LHC will open additional measurements
The discovery of new spatial dimensions, “rolled in a tube, particles of” dark matter “Finally, the Higgs boson – all this can be found after the start of the physics of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), said director general of the European Organization for Nuclear Research, Rolf Hoyer.

“Before we opened the largest in a decade series of possible new discoveries,” – wrote Hoyer in circulation, entitled “On the threshold of a new territory,” published at CERN .

According to the head of CERN, for a week to start a session of the collider at the energy of the collision teraelectronvolt 7, which will continue over the next year or two. During this period the detectors of the accelerator must earn enough data to make significant discoveries in various fields of physics.

In particular, writes Rolf Hoyer, ATLAS and CMS detectors have a sensitivity high enough to detect the hypothetical supersymmetric particles called neutralinos, of which, according to theory, is “dark matter”.

In addition, the Large Hadron Collider will be able to continue to have begun on the electron-positron LEP collider search for the Higgs boson – a hypothetical particle, which is responsible for the mass of all elementary particles. “There is a chance to open it, if the mass of the particle is within 160 GeV”, – said Hoyer.

Another area where discoveries can be expected with the launch Collider – a study of hypothetical ” additional measurements, which reveal themselves only in the micro scale, comparable to the size of elementary particles, RIA Novosti “.

” Experiments on the tank will be sensitive to the new massive particles, which may indicate the presence of extra dimensions. Their weight may be about 2 teraelectronvolt, while so far achieved the limit is only 1 teraelectronvolt, “- says the head of CERN.

Large Hadron Collider was created by scientists of the European Organization Nuclear Research (CERN) with the participation of physicists from more than 40 countries, including Ukraine. Construction of the installation took more than 6 billion euros. As expected, it provided new data on the nature of matter and the fundamental physical laws.

Creating installation began in late 1990, and in September 2008 she was solemnly launched : physicists have successfully beams of protons in both directions. Within a week on the accelerator there was a major accident involving the release of one of the magnets of the superconducting state.

As investigation showed the cause of the accident were defective electrical contacts that connect the superconducting cables. In some of them between the copper stabilizer and the superconducting cable have been void. At sufficiently high amperage contact resistance began to increase the contact temperature also rose, and this led to the output cable from the superconducting state, the damaged pipeline cryogenic system, discharge of liquid helium into the tunnel, tightness and exit the installation fails.

During the year, CERN specialists worked to improve the reliability of electrical connections between the power of magnets and establishes a system of protection of QPS, which protects the superconducting magnets of similar accidents.

On the night of November 21, 2009, scientists launched a new collider. Then he was stopped for the Christmas holidays, during which it was carried tuning, testing, and installing a new system to protect against the loss of superconductivity. Sunday, February 28, the installation was launched again.
